The Hands of Sligo - A Poem

One of the Hands of Sligo volunteers heard me on the radio and was inspired to write a poem about her hands. I met up with her and she read me the poem, I recorded her saying it, so you can all hear it. I was so touched that the project had inspired her to put pen to paper. She also showed me some of the beautiful crafts that she in working on, you can see her hands holding it in the video.

Is this girl supposed to be some kind of pianist??? Oh dear!!! This Haydn Sonata is Grade 8 level and she is still having trouble with it. Fingers nowhere near strong enough or reliable. Silly and off-putting faces too while she plays. Irritating to put it mildly. This is just plain bad.
Of course these had talent and what you see here is just a sample of the many Showbands that old repressed Ireland. Think of it the country Churched to death, And these come along and get Women and Men out for live music and entertainment . It's important to mention greats like The late Rory Gallagher, Gary Moore,Phil Coulter And of course Wee Van Morrison and the Monarchs from Belfast All cut their teeth in the showband era. A lot of these acts travelled to Germany to entertain soldiers and would of dreamt of breaking America. An awful lot of oul hatefull shite has been lobbed at the ole Irish Showband scene but let's face it Irish people are amongst the most musically talented people on Earth. We bred U2, The Pale, The boy bands are kinda showbandish and put our country on the map for all the right reasons Big respect!
